The largest city and county seat of Spokane County and the metropolitan center of the inland Northwest, Spokane was the first U.S. city to undertake a joint peak oil-climate change task force. The task force was not created by council resolution, but instead by the mayor.

City launched a sustainability strategic planning effort to address both peak oil and climate change.

Spokane Mayor Mary Verner selected 13 people to serve on climate change/energy security task force.
