The city is forming a community task force to study how peak oil will affect Hamilton.

Council approved $35,000 to set up the Community Energy Collaborative to explore the city's energy supply vulnerabilities. The task force will look at economic, social and environmental sustainability and urban planning.

Peak oil is a term used to describe the point when the world's oil supply hits its peak and begins to decline.

Council had previously approved $100,000 for hiring a consultant to report on peak oil. Hamiltonians for Progressive Development opposes the switch to a volunteer effort.

"The impact of peak oil on Hamilton and its future sustainability is far too important to be left to anyone other than qualified experts ... ," wrote co-chair Michael Desnoyers in an e-mail.

Councillor Brian McHattie said he wanted community input.

"I think a lot of people are interested in this and we should draw from those folks."
